Valentine Holmes offered NFL deal by New York Jets

Valentine Holmes' American dream is alive after the 23-year-old was allocated a spot with the New York Jets as part of the NFL's International Pathway Program.

The NFL announced on Tuesday morning that Holmes was allocated a spot with the Jets however under the pathway program rules the Australian won't be eligible to play in the NFL in the 2019 season unless elevated to the 53-man roster before the start of the season.

Holmes is one of seven international players from five different countries who have been training at Florida's IMG Academy the past three months.

The former Queensland and Australian representative got the chance to perform in front of NFL scouts at a combine last week, however, he wasn't picked up as a free agent.

Under the Pathway rules, players that aren't signed to free agent deals are eligible for a practice squad exemption, allowing one of the AFC East teams - Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots and the Jets - space for an eleventh practice squad member.

However, the player is ineligible to be activated during their first season if he remains on the practice squad and doesn't earn a spot on the 53-man roster to start the season.

The North Queensland Cowboys were holding out hope of luring Holmes to the club this season to fill the fullback void left by Ben Barba’s sacking earlier in the year.

Holmes has been listed as a running back/wide receiver/kick returner, was notified he will be joining the Green & White when he received a call from general manager Mike Maccagnan on Tuesday morning.
