NRL Hall of Fame member Herb Steinohrt is born. Included nine Test matches among his 31 appearances for Australia. One of those was the infamous 1932 ''Battle of Brisbane''. Australia won that match despite a number of players being badly injured.

Former NSW and Australian representative Jamal Idris signs with Wests Tigers ending a self-imposed exile of 18 months. He made five NRL appearances during the 2017 season.

Veteran Wests Tigers five-eighth Benji Marshall is named captain of New Zealand for end-of-season Tests against Australia and Great Britain, meaning he will break the all-time record for most Tests as Kiwi captain (20) that he shared with former halfback Gary Freeman.
