Elite NRL and NRLW players have taken part in video messages to encourage Australians to keep downloading the Coronavirus Contact App.

Damien Cook and Tom Burgess (South Sydney Rabbitohs), Wade Graham (Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks), Clint Gutherson (Parramatta Eels) and Tiana Penitani (St George Illawarra NRLW) have all filmed special videos to support use of the app in order to accelerate the removal of current restrictions on the community and businesses.

Increased use of the app will also play a role in ensuring the return of junior sport.

The NRL has worked with the RLPA to encourage players to download the app, and some of the game’s best players have backed the use of the technology.

ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys applauded the players for getting behind the use of the app as they continued to train ahead of the season resumption.

“The app will be an important tool for our own protocols and clearly it will also be extremely important for the entire community as the Government looks to continue easing restrictions in the future,” Mr V’landys said.

“Our players can play a leadership role in encouraging Australians to download the app and it is pleasing to see some of our best players doing just that.”

Cook, the Rabbitohs hooker, said he wanted to download the app in order to ensure restrictions would be eased sooner.

“As players we know how important it is for the game for restrictions to be eased and if downloading the app will do that we are more than happy to play our part,” Cook said.

“If me encouraging people to download leads to more people using the app, I’m happy to play my role.”

RLPA Chief Executive Clint Newton said: "Our members continue to play a leading role in supporting government health and safety initiatives in the community.

“It is another outstanding example of players stepping up during these challenging times and hopefully by encouraging others in the community to download the app we help minimise the transmission of COVID-19.”

The app can be downloaded at covid.gov.au.
