Dragons 'just scratching surface' with Ravalawa: Young

Dragons interim coach Dean Young says winger Mikaele Ravalawa is just scratching the surface of his full potential with the Fijian flyer still not aware of how good he can be.

Ravalawa scored a double in the 28-24 win over the Broncos and became the Dragons' leading tryscorer for the season with 12 in the process.

It was the second double in consecutive weeks for the 22-year-old who notched the mark against the Eels the previous week in a 14-12 win.

Fullback Matt Dufty had two try assists and combined well with Zac Lomax and Ravalawa on the right side.

"Mika is a great finisher," said Young.

"He gets balls in positions 10 metres out from the tryline and a lot of the time there might be a winger or a fullback there and he finishes them.

"He is a real talent and we are only scratching the surface with how good he can actually be. He doesn’t know how good he could be and I think he has got a bright future if he keeps working hard.”

Young wouldn’t go as far as to say Ravalawa was a "coach’s dream" but he did reveal the secret to getting the best out of the powerhouse winger.

"He wasn’t a coach’s dream when he was dropping all those balls earlier in the year, and especially last year," Young said.

"What I have noticed with the Fijians is that you have got to have fun with them. If you are serious with Mika all the time you are not going to get the best out of him. You’ve got to have a joke with him.

"He just wants to come to training and have fun and he has to understand that he has to put the hard work in to get the best out of himself."

Young said five-eighth Corey Norman came up with some “big plays and some big kicks” from deep in Dragons territory in the second stanza which proved crucial against Brisbane.

Prop Paul Vaughan added drive off the bench after returning from his two-week break after breaking NRL biosecurity rules.

"He obviously spent two weeks at home and paid the price for his error. He let the club down and he knows that. We have moved on from it and he played his part in the team," Young said.

"The boys that started against Parramatta did a good job and earned the right to start again so Paul came off the interchange and I thought he did his role."

Young said there was a lot to like about the performance by his side but that they were still not the full package by a long shot.

"It is the third time this year that we have competed for the full 80 minutes. One was last week against Parramatta, once was against Manly and tonight,” Young said.

"There was a lot of fatigue in the game and I thought the boys showed some real grit and consistency to get the job done. I challenged them on that.

"It was far from a perfect performance. It was a lethargic performance from us to be fair but I asked them to back up their want to compete for each other for the full 80 minutes and they have done that."
