Newcastle all but sealed a finals berth and Cronulla leapfrogged two teams into eighth in round 23 of the Telstra Premiership.

The Knights' 22-16 win over wooden spooners Canterbury was not pretty but has virtually sealed seventh spot with a four-point gap on the eighth-placed Sharks heading into the final two rounds.

Canberra and the Gold Coast missed their chance to claim eighth spot with losses to the Sea Eagles and Storm respectively.

After equalling the all-time record of 19 straight wins, Melbourne would have to lose both their last two games to surrender the minor premiership to Penrith.
