The Broncos have included 13 players with NRL experience and two State of Origin representatives in their team for the opening trial game of the season against Wynnum Manly at Kougari Oval on Saturday afternoon.
Maroons Origin centre Brenko Lee and prop Tom Flegler headline a squad that features players with a collective 564 games of NRL to their names, including new signings Jordan Pereira, Corey Jensen and Te Maire Martin.
Flegler will lead a forward pack featuring fellow prop Keenan Palasia and lock Kobe Hetherington, who both emerged as first grade regulars as the Broncos rebounded in the back half of the 2021 NRL season, Palasia returning from a shoulder fracture sustained in Round 21.
Emerging hooker Cory Paix and exciting Broncos Academy backrow product Brendan Piakura will also start against the Seagulls, while tough middle forward signing Corey Jensen, who brings 58 NRL games from his time at the Cowboys, will also be on display.
In the backline, a host of the Broncos’ new signings get a start with Storm Premiership winner Lee in the centres and Jordan Pereira on the wing after a strong preseason.
The good news story of the off season, Te Maire Martin, will start off the interchange, marking another step in his remarkable comeback from a bleed on the brain that stopped his 55-game NRL career in its tracks in April 2019.
Now 26, Martin has restarted his top-level career as if he never left and has impressed in January training at Red Hill after signing a one-year Development List contract with the Broncos.
In the halves, promising young playmaker Ezra Mam will partner with veteran Tyrone Roberts, who has been with the Broncos on a train and trial deal across the preseason as he looks to add to his 156 NRL appearances.
Gates open on Saturday at Kougari Oval at 10.30am with curtain raisers including Wynnum’s U19 Women, U16 Cyril Connell Challenge and U18 Mal Meninga Cup teams all playing against another Broncos Affiliate Club in the Norths Devils.
