Recruit watch: Greg Marzhew

The NRL market has been in full swing for 2023 with several stars switching clubs ahead of the new season.

NRL.com takes a look at the major transfers and how your club will benefit from a star arrival.

Greg Marzhew (Knights)

  • Age: 25
  • Position they’ll fill: Wing
  • Contracted until: 2025

What Marzhew can bring

Former Titans winger Greg Marzhew makes the switch to the Knights in 2023 after impressing with 15 tries in 25 appearances on the Gold Coast.

The 25-year-old made his NRL debut in 2021 as a late bloomer and immediately drew attention for his size and strength on the edge.

Marzhew averaged 152 metres per game in 2022 and with the departure of Edrick Lee to the Dolphins, the Knights gain a replacement capable of filling the void.

He also finished in the NRL's top five for tackle breaks with a whopping 117 in 17 games played - the most of any winger in the competition.

It's no surprise the Knights went after him, and somewhat of a surprise the Titans were willing to let him go.

Why it’ll work

Newcastle’s back five struggled to make yardage consistently in 2022 with Marzhew among the new recruits in the squad who can help take some heat off the forwards.

Only Dom Young churned out more metres than Marzhew in 2022 with Newcastle's outside backs struggling to build any momentum early in their sets.

Adam O'Brien used Enari Tuala on the wing before Edrick Lee returned to the paddock after more than 12 months on the sidelines with a foot injury.

Marzhew's monster match

Hymel Hunt also had a limited 2022 season, playing just one game in first grade due to injuries.

The former Titan should also benefit playing on a left side of the field that finds plenty of points, particularly with Kalyn Ponga favouring that channel in attack.

Marzhew has a couple of technical things to correct defensively, but at 25 and with a three-year deal under his belt, the Knights are clearly willing to play the long game with him.
