The Royce Simmons Foundation is proud to announce the return of The Big Walk, with the 2026 edition set to honour Panthers great John Farragher OAM and continue raising vital funds for dementia research.
Founded by rugby league icon Royce Simmons, the Foundation remains committed to supporting dementia research that can make a lasting difference for people living with the disease, their families and future generations.
This year’s walk will begin on Monday 24 August in Gilgandra, the hometown of the late John Farragher OAM.
Born in Gilgandra, Farragher’s journey with the Panthers began on the field, where he played as a powerful prop forward. Just seven games into his first grade career, Farragher suffered a life-changing spinal injury when a scrum collapsed during a match against Newtown at Henson Park in 1978. He was just 21 years old.
A much-loved figure in the Panthers community, Farragher’s courage, resilience and enduring connection to the club will be recognised as Royce and supporters begin the journey from his hometown.
From Gilgandra, The Big Walk will travel through the Central West, including Dubbo, the hometown of Panthers co-captain and most-capped player Isaah Yeo, before continuing to Royce’s own hometown of Gooloogong and finishing in Cowra.
Simmons said the walk continued to be driven by community, connection and a determination to support those affected by dementia.
“Each year, The Big Walk reminds us how powerful community can be,” Simmons said.
“Every step is for people living with dementia, their families, and the researchers working to find better treatments and, one day, a cure.
“This year is also a special one, starting in Gilgandra in honour of John Farragher. John is a huge part of the Panthers family, and it means a lot to recognise him as part of this journey.”
Following the completion of the walk, Royce will celebrate at the Panthers’ Round 27 clash against Wests Tigers on Sunday 6 September at CommBank Stadium.
The match will also form part of the club’s 60th season celebrations, with all former players invited to attend the final home game of the regular season.
The Panthers team will wear a special jersey for the occasion, adding further significance to a milestone match that will bring together the club’s past and present.
The fixture also holds personal meaning for Simmons, who served as assistant coach of Wests Tigers during their 2005 NRL Premiership-winning season.
