Centre Herbie Farnworth says the Broncos need to be more ruthless in order to capitalise on strong starts during the 2021 NRL season.

The Broncos shot out of the blocks at home to lead 16-0 at halftime in the season opener against Parramatta, with expansive team tries to Xavier Coates (2) and David Mead.

But Brisbane could not maintain the momentum after the break, with the Eels eventually fighting back to win as in injury-hit Brisbane was reduced to just one fit player on the bench for the final 20 minutes.

“Keeping the ball and when we are on top, being a bit more ruthless and finish off the game,” said Farnworth, when asked by media today how the Broncos could improve.

“We can get that through practise and as you play more games you will get better at it, but there were some good signs there against the Eels.

“That last 20 minutes, even though we didn’t get the win, we were definitely fighting until the final whistle. We just couldn’t find that winning try.”

Farnworth, one of the real bright spots for the Broncos last season, again impressed in attack and defence in Round 1.

He was moved to the wing towards the end of the first half to cover for injured winger Xavier Coates, who trained well today and looks recovered after falling awkwardly on his neck while diving to score his second try against the Eels.

“When he goes for tries he needs to stop doing those big fancy dives for the cameras and start keeping lower and just putting the ball down,” joked Farnworth today when asked about Coates’ injury.

“But he’s scored some pretty special tries so you can‘t really question him, I reckon.”
