Newcastle have received a boost on the eve of their second straight finals campaign with the retention of Lachlan Fitzgibbon on a two-year contract extension.

The injured back-rower, who is seven seasons into his NRL career, said he was stoked to secure his future and remain a one-club player.

"I’ve been with the club now since 2013, I’m a Novocastrian boy and I couldn’t see myself playing in any other colours," Fitzgibbon said.

"We’re starting to see the improvement of our squad over the last two years with Adam and we’re looking at some bigger and better things in the near future."

With the ability to punch through holes and hit as hard as most, the South Newcastle junior adds an extra dimension to the Knights' attack and has formed formidable combinations with Mitchell Pearce and Kalyn Ponga.

His 2021 campaign ended recently when he suffered a partial dislocation of his shoulder and needed surgery.

"It’s great to keep a local junior at the club who has been here since he was 15 years old," Newcastle head of recruitment Clint Zammit said.

"Lachlan has come through the grades and progressed to the NRL level, and we are very pleased he’s agreed to stay."
