Biography

Andrew Ettingshausen made his first-grade debut in 1983 with Cronulla as an 18-year-old local junior. With breathtaking speed, 'ET' quickly developed a cult following in the Sutherland Shire.

Ettingshausen's movie-star looks played an integral part in the game's evolution, helping attract a stronger female audience to the game.

Ettingshausen was a try-scoring magnet on the wing and in the centres for Cronulla, NSW and Australia.

He crossed a club record 165 times in a 328-game career for the Sharks, including a five-try haul against Illawarra in 1988.

His blistering speed led super-coach Jack Gibson to remark: ''ET's so quick he can turn the light off and be in bed before it gets dark''.

It would be an injustice to underrate Ettingshausen's defensive qualities. He transformed himself into a rugged tackler and formed a reliable centre combination with Sharks team-mate Mark McGaw.

Both players also starred with NSW, Ettingshausen playing centre, wing and fullback for the Blues.

The longevity of Ettingshausen's career was extraordinary, spanning 18 years in an era when the speed of the game accelerated substantially.

Despite limited success at Cronulla, he remained loyal to the Sharks until his retirement in 2000, having established an Australian appearance record as a one-club player.

“Ettingshausen was blessed with searing speed, safe hands and a competitive spirit that brought him great reward in a lengthy career."
